STS for Crude Oil

• Firstly, Origin of Hyodong Marine’s STS(Ship to Ship) transfer of liquid petrochemicals

  An Incheon-based oil refining company had numerous issues about shipping crude oil from the Middle East with VLCC in the 1970s due to the restriction of water depth in Incheon port. After multiple failures of attempts at STS in Incheon OPL(Outside Port Limits), the company chose Yeosu port as an STS’s ideal place with a favorable climate and sea conditions. Even though the trading amount of petrochemical products significantly increased over the globe in many years, the depth and restrictions of port facilities could not catch up with the enlargement of the vessels. To break through this situation, Hyodong Marine Service Co., Ltd. has provided STS(Ship to Ship) petrochemical products transfer service in deep waters complying with international regulations and industrial safety guidelines for safe STS(Ship to Ship) transfer operation.

• Secondly, Present and future stance of STS

  Crude Oil STS has performed in W anchorage and D-2 anchorage at present. However, several talks between port users and port authorities occurred about improving the berthing capacity and loosening the restriction on the vessels in Yeosu-Kwangyang port h 2014. Currently, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries conducts the feasibility evaluation service for the availability of STS operation to VLCC within D-1 anchorage. Once approved by the state government, STS (Ship to Ship) transfer operation will activate even more in Yeosu Port with full-laden VLCC accommodation.
